Former President Benigno Aquino III said he would definitely closely monitor the much-awaited investigation on the killing of Albuera town Mayor Rolando Espinoza inside his detention cell last November 5.
“Like everyone else, I will be waiting for the investigation,” Aquino told reporters at the sidelines of Pray for 8-concert held on Sunday as he re-echoed the suggestion of Senator Panfilo Lacson to open anew the extra-judicial killings probe.
“Inaasahan ng bawat isa na magiging mabilis ang imbestigasyon tungkol dito at para malaman natin kung ano talaga ang tunay na nangyari dito” he said.
According to Albuera PNP Chief Jovie Espinido, Mayor Espinoza was shot dead at sub-provincial jail in Baybay City in Leyte following a raid conducted by the PNP Region 8 Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to serve search warrant on the mayor’s jail cell.
In his recount, Supt. Melvin Marcos of the CIDG said that Espinoza along with his fellow slain inmate Raul Yap allegedly fired shots while his group was serving search warrant at a pre-dawn of Saturday, November 5.
However, Secretary Ismael Sueno of Department of Interior and Local Government, in a DZMM interview, questioned the issuance of search warrant on Espinoza’s jail cell as he was already in jail.
The former mayor turned over himself to PNP Chief Ronald M. dela Rosa last July after Pres. Duterte asked him along with his son Kerwin to surrender over their involvement in the illegal drug trade.
